14. Obstacles: The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

Junior has had to face many obstacles. It starts when he starts going to the white school. All of his friends ignore him and everyone thinks he’s a trader. No one on the rez talks to him anymore except for a handful of people. His best friend, Rowdy, totally ignores him. A few months later his dad’s friend, Eugene, gets drunk with his friend and they get in a fight. He then gets killed because his friend shot him in the face. Junior’s grandmother dies a few weeks later. Then his older sister runs off with a guy and lives in Montana with him. Next his sister passes away. Junior is always facing an obstacle of some sort. It never seems to end for him.

7.Themes: The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian has a great theme. This book is teaching us that anything is possible. That you can do anything you set your mind to. If you work hard enough, you can make a new life for yourself. Junior lives on the rez with his parents and their family is very poor. When they do find some money, his dad goes on a trip with all that money and drinks, coming back with like maybe $5. Junior doesn’t want to live his life that way, so he goes to the white school that’s off the rez. He gets a good education so that he doesn’t have to live like his parents live. He proves that if you set your mind to it, you can do anything.

24. PERSUASION: The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

Everyone who’s currently in English class should read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is a book about the struggle of an Indian boy named Junior who’s going to a white school away form his home. It shows the determination that he has to make a difference in his life, and how he’s working to make himself a better life. A life where he’s no longer poor or always drinking, doing drugs, etc. like all of the other indians on his reservation. It’s written from his point of view so it’s easy to understand and his drawings are in the book, so it’s even easier to understand. He has a wonderful sense of humor that makes this book a lot of fun to read, and very hard to put down. This is why everyone should read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.

2.) Connect - The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

In this story Junior is being beat up and picked on y the people on the ‘rez’ because he’s going to a white school and not the school on the rez. (Rez is their word for reservation.) Everyone on the rez goes out of his/her way to make sure that Junior is absolutely miserable because they all feel they’ve betrayed him for going to the white school. This is like one of the Disney movies I watched(yes Disney), Cyberbully. Something ends up on her online page that makes everyone turn their backs on her and go out of their way to make her life miserable. It’s really sad to think about and I can’t wait to get back to my book to see what happens next.

4. Characters: The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian has many characters, all with very different personalities. First off is Junior. He was born with too much cerebral fluid and had a surgery at a very young age. This left him physically handicapped and also gave him a life full of bullying. Next is Rowdy, Rowdy is Junior’s best friend. He’s big and tough, but he has some anger issues. His dad is always drinking and beating up him and his mom. He just shrugs it off and calls it ‘war paint.’ Junior’s parents had goals in life, but no one had payed attention to them. His mom is always reading and she absorbs the information almost immediately. She would’ve been a great teacher. His dad wanted to play the saxophone. He would’ve been good at it too. I can’t wait to find out more about these characters and others in my book.
